Here are the potential sleeper hits to come of summer 2026.
1. The Backrooms
Release Date: May 29, 2026
Why it’s a Sleeper: A cinematic creepy low-budget horror film based on the viral "liminal space" internet horror phenomenon. Produced by A24 and directed by first-time helmer Kane Parsons (who created the original viral videos at age 17), this taps into a massive Gen Z audience. Similarly to films such as Skinamarink or Five Nights at Freddy's, it could significantly over-perform its modest budget by millions as many other high concept horror films do these days. The trailer dropped a few months ago and has made quite the impression online, with no huge competition the weekend it is released it could conjure up a decent sized audience.
2. The Sheep Detectives
Release Date: May 8, 2026
Why it’s a Sleeper: This off-beat quirky, high-concept murder mystery has a unique twist (as made clear by the title), the detectives are sheep. Based on the international bestseller Three Bags Full, it features a strong ensemble including Hugh Jackman and Emma Thompson in the lead roles. It’s the type of "cozy mystery" that could capture the older audience that made Knives Out a success, but also the comedic side of the film may well appeal to the younger audience, if that is the case then the studio will have a modest hit on their hands.
3. The Invite
Release Date: June 26, 2026
Why it’s a Sleeper: This off-beat drama about neighbours throwing dinner parties dropped its first trailer in recently and showcases a quirky comedy-drama style character piece. Not much is revealed about the plot, but at its core it looks like a fairly stripped down straight-forward film about people and their relationships. This is the type of film that older audiences might find relatable and easy-watching, we don't get many films like this anymore. Everything has to have visual effect and action but this is very much a boots on the ground, character driven film. Interestingly, this is directed by Olivia Wilde, she hit the ground running with her directorial-debut with "Booksmart" but her follow-up effort "Don't Worry Darling" left some people scratching their heads, this time she is going back to basics and the genre that she originally succeeded so well in. The film stars Seth Rogen, Edward Nortan, Penelope Cruz and Olivia Wilde.
4. The End of Oak Street
Release Date: August 14, 2026
Why it’s a Sleeper: Very little is know about this film, since its inception all almost all plot details have been kept strictly under wraps, which has built a large anticipation and intrigue from the audience. Mitchell’s ability to master atmosphere evolve this into the summer's "weird" and "must-see" movie that everyone wants to talk about. This mysterious sci-fi thriller is from writer-director David Robert Mitchell the man behind It Follows and Under the Silver Lake, and stars Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor in the lead roles. The film is produced by JJ Abrams, which adds to the "mystery box" interest which is building online. The trailer seems to feature a street either moving back in time or to another planet or something along those lines. Either way we are getting Dinosaurs in this odd little film.
5. The Death of Robin Hood
Release Date: June 19, 2026
Why it’s a Sleeper: An eerie, dark, and gritty reimagining of the classic legend. This isn't the usual swashbuckling action and adventure you would expect from a film about Robin Hood. It stars Hugh Jackman as an older, battle-worn, jaded Robin Hood seeking one last chance at redemption, and Jodie Comer as a mysterious woman who gives him a chance at it. The trailer looks action-packed but also has the vibe and visual style of something like "The Northman ". The film is directed by Michael Sarnoski who also directed Pig and A Quiet Place: Day One, it promises a heavy emotional depth and visceral experience than previous versions.
