Top 10 Films still to come to cinemas this year

Updated: Apr 27

We are now a third of the way through the year, here are the films to watch out for that are still to come.

1. Avengers: Doomsday

  • Release Date: December 18, 2026

  • The Hype: The long awaited sequel to the biggest film of all time. The Russo Brothers return to direct, but one of the big selling points for fans is Robert Downey Jr. returning to the franchise not as Iron Man, but as the primary antagonist Victor von Doom. This film is expected to conclude Multiverse Saga's by teaming up the avengers with the original X-men. Marvel has already announced a huge amount of cast members reprising their roles, including fan-favourites Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan in their iconic roles as Professor Xavier and Magneto. In recent years the public interest in the franchise has wained, due to an unclear direction, mediocre films, and the loss of the lead characters. Fans are hoping that this will fix all of that with one big swing and a follow-up a year later.

2. Dune: Part Three (Messiah)

  • Release Date: December 18, 2026

  • The Hype: Denis Villeneuve fast-tracked the adaptation of Dune Messiah to complete the epic Paul Atreides' (Timothée Chalamet) cinematic arc. Audiences are eager to see all out war unfold and how Villeneuve handles the stranger, more complex plot elements of the beloved book. The film has also stolen all of the IMAX screens in North America from Avengers: Doomsday, which will give it a boost at the box office. The film will see the return of most of the principle cast from the first 2, including Josh Brolin, Rebecca Ferguson and Zendaya, but also the return of Jason Momoa, we won't spoil how he returns here. Early trailers and footage have had strong audience reactions, the film is anticipated to easily beat the box office of the previous film which closed with over $700 million worldwide.

3. The Odyssey (Christopher Nolan Project)

  • Release Date: July 17, 2026

  • The Hype: Christopher Nolan’s first film since his Oscar darling Oppenheimer. While not much has been revealed about the film or it's plot, it is confirmed as a massive IMAX spectacle featuring a massive stacked cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Jon Bernthal and Tom Holland. The early tickets for this went on sale a year before the release date, and all of the tickets sold out, this is a clear indicator that the film will be a huge hit this summer.

4. The Mandalorian and Grogu

  • Release Date: May 22, 2026

  • The Hype: Interestingly this is the first Star Wars film to hit theaters since 2019. Jon Favreau directs this big-screen follow-up of the popular Disney+ series, bringing Din Djarin and "Baby Yoda" into a big budget action-packed spectacle. The interest in the Star Wars franchise has dwindled in recent years, with the poor reception of many of the Disney+ shows, and the underwhelming films such as the The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Not to mention for years we have had so many film announcements that have quietly been cancelled. However the first 17 minutes of the film were shown at Cinemacon recently, and the reception has been very positive. If the film turns out to be a return to form for the franchise this might reignite the interest and bring out a large audience. The early tracking numbers for this film are all over the place, hopefully the interest will increase as we get closer to the release date.

5. Toy Story 5

  • Release Date: June 19, 2026

  • The Hype: Pixar returns to its best-known franchise. While Toy Story 4 felt like a definitive ending, Disney CEO Bob Iger made a great decision to bring back Woody and Buzz possibly for the last time. Andrew Stanton, a veteran of the original films, is at the helm. The previous 2 Toy Story films hit the billion dollar mark, clearly there is still life in this franchise, and the reception from all of the previous films has been overwhelmingly positive. This sets the bar very high for this film, although Pixar have their formula and most of the time it seems to work. Not much has been released about the film, the film is expected to be another win for Pixar at the box office.

6. Spider-Man: Brand New Day

  • Release Date: July 31, 2026

  • The Hype: The highly anticipated fourth solo outing with Tom Holland’s as Peter Parker. Following the ending of No Way Home, this film is expected to be a more human story, on a street-level featuring a Peter Parker who is struggling to rebuild his life in a world where no one remembers him. The trailer became by far the most watched trailer in history, beating the previous record holder Deadpool and Wolverine. This indicates that after the last film which made nearly $2 billion during the Covid era is very anticipated. Expect huge box office numbers for this one, and potentially a few more records broken. The film features the Scorpian and Tombstone as the villains, and also Bruce Banna (The Hulk) and Frank Castle (The Punisher).

7. Disclosure Day (Steven Spielberg UFO Film)

  • Release Date: June 12, 2026

  • The Hype: Steven Spielberg returns to the genre that truly defined his career (ET, Close Encounters). This film is based on an idea that Speilberg himself came up with, and the film has been shrouded in mystery from the beginning and has been called a "sentimental blockbuster,". The film has been described as exploring the spirituality of humanity officially discovering that they are not alone in the universe. The exact plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film looks high on action, with lots of fast-paced chase sequences and as clearly big on spectacle. An extended look at the film was shown at Cinemacon, the reception to the footage was very positive with people praising the tone, performances and action set-pieces. The film has a strong cast featuring Josh O'Connor, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Wyatt Russell.

8. The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping

  • Release Date: November 20, 2026

  • The Hype: Based on Suzanne Collins' latest novel, this prequel focuses on the 50th Hunger Games, the "Second Quarter Quell". The previous Hunger Games film which was also a prequel brought in over £300 million at the box office, this is far from the £800 million that Catching Fire brought in at the box office in 2014. It would seem that the interest in the Hunger Games franchise has faded, the last prequel didn't exactly thrill audiences, but who knows maybe this one can turn things around. Francis Lawrence returns to direct this, from a script by Billy Ray who wrote the script for the first Jennifer Lawrence film.

9. Digger

  • Release Date: October 2, 2026

  • The Hype: A strange arty black comedy from Alejandro G. Iñárritu starring Tom Cruise. This marks a departure from Cruise’s usual action roles. The film features him in heavy makeup as an ego-driven man trying to save the world from a disaster that he triggered. A teaser trailer for this was released a while back and didn't give away much about the plot, or even give much of a look at Cruise, but it did make clear that this would be a very different type of role for Cruise. When Cruise steps away from his usual Blockbuster roles the results are usually mixed. Magnolia was a great film but not a huge hit by any means, and the same can be said for Lions for Lambs and Rock of Ages.

10. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

  • Release Date: June 26, 2026

  • The Hype: A major move by James Gunn to continue to build his new DC Universe (DCU). Starring Milly Alcock, this film is based on the critically acclaimed Tom King comic and is expected to be a space-opera spectacle rather than the usual superhero films we are acustomed to. The trailer has had a warm reception by fans, and almost looks like it is borrowing from Guardians of the Galaxy in its visual look and feel. The film is expected to open strong with some predicting an opening weekend of $100 million across North America. The film also stars Jason Momoa, not as Aquaman but this time as Lobo. Many fans are excited to see Jason Momoa play the role that some people think he was born to play
